Insight: keeping organic feed fresh on the farm

Simple steps that keep organic feed and raw materials safe and fresh between delivery and the feeding trough.

As new-season maize comes to market, keeping feed and raw materials fresh and safe becomes a daily job. Organic raw materials are sensitive to their surroundings, so controlling the environment around them is the best protection.

Simple steps

  1. Watch moisture. Damp feed invites moulds and the toxins they make. Check it on arrival and keep it dry.
  2. Store with air around it. A dry, well ventilated store, with bags on pallets and away from walls.
  3. Keep it clean and separate. Keep organic feed apart from conventional feed and from anything that could contaminate it.
  4. First in, first out. Use older feed first, and order in amounts the farm can use while fresh.
  5. Keep the lot record. Note the lot number of each delivery, so its origin can always be shown to a certifier.
